Preparing Your Metal Roof For A New Seaon

How to Prepare Your Metal Roof For Spring Plymouth massachusetts 15 May

There’s no doubt about the protection a roof offers your home, especially a metal roof. But just like any other part of your home’s exterior, it needs maintenance on a regular basis. Now that spring is here, it’s time to give it some TLC so it can handle the rest of the season and all of summer.

Get help from your trusted South Shore roofer, and heed these tips on how to prepare your metal roof for spring.

Trim Overhanging Branches

While you may appreciate the shade all those trees offer your property in the warm weather, it’s important to trim them back if branches are overhanging your home. Large branches are at risk of breaking off during a storm and landing on the roof, denting the metal and compromising durability. On top of that, overhanging branches can drop debris onto the surface of your roof, such as leaves, small branches, pollen, and dirt. All that debris can accumulate and weaken the condition of the roof as time passes.

Clean the Gutters

Your gutters should be cleaned out in fall and spring. You can scoop out the debris on your own or hire a gutter or roofing contractor to do it for you. Once the debris is out, you can use a garden hose to flush the rest of the dirt out. At the same time, check that your downspouts are properly positioned to redirect water flow away from your foundation.

Remove Debris and Wash the Surface

Clutter that’s allowed to accumulate on the surface of the roof will increase the chance that the metal will start to leak or rust. Brush away loose debris first, followed by a deep clean. You may only need water to clean the roof, but if you need more power, mix in some mild dish soap. Use a soft sponge or microfiber cloth to wipe the surface. Allow it to sit 15 minutes, then rinse with the hose.

Check For Leaks

Before rainy season arrives in full force, inspect your interior for signs of leaks. Look for water stains in the attic, and on the ceilings and walls. If you spot any, these could be due to compromised sealant, loose screws or a crack. It’s best to ask your South Shore roofer for a more thorough inspection and diagnosis. You may just need a repair or you may need a replacement depending on the extent of the damage.
